Lego League » FIRST LEGO League

FIRST LEGO League challenges kids to think like scientists and engineers. During the season, you will choose and solve a real-world problem in the Project. You will also build, test, and program an autonomous robot using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® technology to solve a set of missions in the Robot Game. Throughout your experience, our team will operate under the FIRST signature set of Core Values, celebrating discovery, teamwork, and Gracious Professionalism®.

Central Magnet School participates in the FIRST robotics competitions (www.firstinspires.org). FIRST is a global robotics team competition in which students use math, science and engineering, social skills, creative design along with creative problem solving to achieve an engineering design objective. Building a robot is part of the competition but team members also document, market and promote their team’s design to a panel of judges. This team is like any sports team in that the right people must be selected for their expected contribution to the team effort.

Central Magnet has adopted the team name MAGNETUDE. This is for branding purposes and will be used at all levels of competition. This year we will have 3 separate teams: FIRST Lego League, FIRST Tech Challenge, and FIRST Robotics Championships. Each competition is designed for specific grade and ability levels:

  •       FIRST Lego League (FLL) is limited to middle school.
  •       FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) is available for middle and high school students.
  •       FIRST Robotics Championships (FRC) is for high school students only.

Robotics is a major time commitment. Each team will meet three to five times a week throughout the contest season. Contests will take place on weekends depending on the contest you are involved in and you may compete in more than one contest. The World Championships take place in Houston, TX in April, 2020.  Meetings will be after school from 3:15pm – 5:15pm. On some days, you can expect meetings to last longer if something needs to be completed by a deadline. We will try and warn you at least a day in advance if we plan to stay late.

Team applications are available in August and meetings will begin after the September 7, 2019 kickoff. We require every team member to have access to an email address that is checked daily. Much of the team communication is conducted via e-mail and it is the team member’s responsibility to stay informed about team activities.

There is no fee to participate in FIRST although fundraising will be done to some degree. Through generous donations from Schneider Electric and Underwriters Laboratories we are able to offer these robotics programs to our students. We do accept additional donations/sponsorship and that is our primary fundraising. If you are interested in helping our program, please contact Marc Guthrie at guthriem@rcschools.net.
