Update 4/19
Here’s a suggested schedule for you to complete your work this week. If a video or link is not available yet, it’s because it’s still being made. Everything should be done by Friday night. Most of these videos allow you to speed them up, which could be helpful.

Monday
  • Go back to the JFK thesis/body paragraph channel, and edit your post. Highlight your what/how/why(audience), why(purpose), why(occasion), why(placement), etc. This will show you where you are spending your time.
  • Then find someone else's paragraph and call 'dibs' on their post. We're going to give each other some more specific feedback than just grow and glow. I'd like as many people as possible to get feedback, so choose early if you have preferences.
  • Read over their post. In your notes, score their essay based on what has been provided. Give it a thesis, evidence and commentary, and sophistication score using the rubric linked here. Make sure you scroll down to the RA link.

Tuesday
  • By the end of the day, craft and post a response to the author of your "dibs" post as if you were talking to that person. Explain their score, using evidence from the rubric and their essay. Discuss the essay's strengths and weaknesses, again citing evidence from the text. Make suggestions for how to build on the essay's strengths and how to improve on the weaknesses. If you'd like, you can make this a video and post the link - Loom is really easy to use. OR you can just write it out. Whatever works for you. This should look similar to what Ms. Esberger, Ms. Nickerson and I did for the mock essays except you're also offering suggestions for improvement.

Wednesday
  • Read/listen to your feedback post (if you got one) and look back over your own highlighting. Reflect on your own strengths and weaknesses and describe concrete steps you will take for maintaining your success or improving. Post this in response to your own thread in the JFK paragraph channel.
  • I will also email parents and students I haven't heard from just to check in. Feel free to email me as well and let me know how you are/what you need/etc. I miss you.

Thursday
  • I will also post a video responding to some of your posts. Please watch.
  • So the JFK prompt is very accessible; it's essay to tackle. But some are more difficult; I'd like to look at a more difficult one - stretching those RA muscles as it were. Read QUESTION ONE here. Take some notes on how you would approach this prompt.

Friday
  • In the Flamingo channel on Teams, post your thoughts about how you might respond to this prompt. You might consider discussing in depth SOAPSTONE, its purpose, how it supports its arguments, what verbs you might use to discuss it, what you think it's saying, how it's complicated, etc. Honestly, share your thinking the way you would in the classroom in small groups. When you post, however, make sure to not repeat what other posters have already shared. You may disagree with other posters, though, or extending their answers by responding to their original posts. Please use evidence to explain your positions.

Update 4/13

Here’s a suggested schedule for you to complete your work this week. If a video or link is not available yet, it’s because it’s still being made. Everything should be done by Friday night. Most of these videos allow you to speed them up, which could be helpful.

Monday:

  • Enjoy your day. Read something for fun. You’re welcome to post about what you’re reading in the COVID reading channel.

Tuesday:

  • Watch this video reviewing thesis statements (stay tuned til the end to hear a crying baby.... )
  • Go back to your JFK thesis post from last week and consider how it needs to be revised. Reply to that post with a new, revised thesis. Label it as REVISED.
    • You’re welcome to give each other glows/grows again. That feedback is good for YOU and your peers. If you DIDN’T post a thesis last week, you can post one this week.
  • Watch this video as I break down your mock scores and discuss trends from your graders.

Wednesday:

  • Reread the mock exam RA prompt - Here
  • Watch these videos on essays that scored 4, 5, and 6 on rhetorical analysis from the mock exam. Ms. Esberger, Ms. Nickerson and I are each creating a video, so we will upload these later this week.
  • In the Mock Essay channel, write what steps YOU need to take/remember to either keep your evidence and commentary score the same if you scored a four OR move it up to AT LEAST A THREE.
    • You’re welcome to ask questions or offer feedback/help or just respond to what others post. **Remember your grades from the mock are posted in Skyward.**

Thursday:

  • Watch this video about how to write a rhetorical analysis body paragraph.
  • Based on what you learned this week AND how you scored on the mock essay, write an INTRO paragraph including your revised JFK thesis and write ONE BODY PARAGRAPH supporting it, taking as long as you need to do a good job. Your goals should be based on your mock essay score.
    • If you got a 2 or below on evidence and commentary, strive for a 3.
    • If you got a 3 on evidence and commentary, strive for a 4.
    • If you got a 4 on evidence and commentary, duplicate your success and strive for a sophistication point.
    • If you got a 4 on evidence and commentary with a sophistication point, try to duplicate your success.

Friday:

  • Now, write a second body paragraph, limiting yourself to finishing in 13 minutes. You will still be trying to get the same sort of score you got before, but now you will be trying to do it in a limited amount of time.
  • Post your intro paragraph with revised thesis and both body paragraphs on the JFK paragraph channel.
  • Respond to at least one peer’s post with a glow and grow.

Above and Beyond

  • You can always watch the review videos on AP Classroom.

Update 4/9
Mock Scores/Grades
1. Mock RA essays are scored and in the gradebook. You should have a column for each row of the rubric and an overall score out of 6 (4 or higher is where you want to be). These are "no count" grades.
2. You do have a grade that DOES count based on your overall score that can only HELP you. So if you scored a 1/6, you made a 10/10; if you scored a 6/6, you made a 60/60.
3. I still haven't entered grades for the Mock MC if you wanted that to count. Several of you said you couldn't see it, double check and let me know if you want that grade to count for you by Sunday night. .
   a. Remember that the MC mock is curved - 80+ is an A, 70+ is a B, etc.
4. If your mock RA grader left comments about your essay, I added those to the mock essay score column (the one out of 6). If you don't have any comments, they didn't leave any. (Remember, teachers around the county read these essays. I didn't.)

Work for this week
1. Thank you to those of you who filled out the Google form. You can find answers to some of your questions here
2. Thank you to those of you who completed the JFK SOAPSTonE and the ONE person who's responded to the paragraph channel...
3. I'll close these channels tomorrow night and post feedback/new assignments over the weekend.

Update 4/4

April 6-10

General:
1. Before anything else, please fill out this Google form. It will provide me with information to best help you over the coming weeks. Please try to complete no later than Tuesday afternoon. I would like to answer your questions via video in Teams during this week.
2. I'm still working on your problem solution piece. This will be a grade in the grade book. Sending your letters will be optional. I still need to approve for you to send your letters.
3. I've added you all to a new Teams - all of our classes combined. You can no longer access any previous Teams for our class.
4. Updates to AP Lang test can be found here.

Work for this week
1. If you haven't yet, watch this AP review video. It will help review rhetorical situation.
3. On Teams, in the JFK SOAPSTonE channel, SOAPSTonE this prompt and write a thesis for this paper.
4. Comment on one other person's post with a "glow and grow," something that student did well and one area of improvement.

Extra Enrichment
1. If you'd like to write a body paragraph for this prompt in the JFK body paragraph channel, you can. I may use it later in our discussions.
2. There is a place in the COVID reading channel to post about what you've been reading. Feel free to share.

Other
1. Continue to read on your own. It doesn't matter what you are reading, just read.
2. The county has provided this resource for juniors. This is optional, but you are welcome to complete it and share it with me for feedback if you'd like.
3. You can always log into ACT CERT and work on ACT skills.
