Beginning with the 2017-18 school year Central Magnet has started competing in FIRST Robotics. This competition is a new venture for Central, but is also a worldwide competition for students. Schneider Electric is our corporate sponsor and will be working with our students to create the robot for the competition in March, 2018. The dates for the competition this year is on March 21-24, 2018. We will compete at UT Knoxville.

Now that the Knoxville competition has come and gone, how did the team do? We won the Rookie All-Star Award. What is that you ask? This award is given to the team that is a Chairman's Award winner in the making. The Chairman's Award is one of the highest honors given at FIRST and includes team spirit, STEM outreach, community service and more. With winning the award, the team now travels to Houston, TX to compete in the FIRST World Championships!

We competed in Houston, TX on April 18 - 21, 2018. It was an amazing experience and we had an opportunity to meet students and teachers from all over the world. Australia, Israel, and Brazil are just a few of the countries who were represented there. Our team did not win the championship, but we performed well within our division and learned a lot about what it will take to get us back to the championships next year. If you are interested in joining our team, please see Mr. Guthrie or Mrs. Murphy for more information. We have several off season events planned and you will want to be a part of them!

NOTE: There are some costs involved that will include hotel, food, and travel expenses for up to 3 days that may not be covered by the team. Team members will be responsible for covering those costs if team funds do not allow for us to pay them.

More information will come as it become available. If you have questions, please speak directly to Mr. Guthrie or email him at guthriem@rcschools.net
