AP U.S. Government:
Class Work:
"A" Block
Students downloaded the "15 SL Case Summaries" WORD DOCUMENT on my AP U.S. Government web page, and they copied down the format for explicating a SCOTUS case. They also discussed the 1st amendment, explaining what each clause meant AND labeling the following religion clauses:
"the establishment clause" AND the "free exercise clause" . They discussed and took notes on the specific meanings of the clauses.
Following is the format for explicating a SCOTUS case. Write them down in your explication; number them, and then write down your responses. YOU DO NOT NEED TO IDENTIFY CASES THAT ARE PRECEDENTS FOR THE ONE YOU'RE EXPLICATING.
1) State the "facts of the case".
2) Identify the constitutional clause SCOTUS used to justify their decision in the case.
3) Explain the "decision" in the case and how the constitutional clause was used to by SCOTUS to justify the ruling in the case.
4) Explain why the decision in the case is significant.
Homework:
On two separate sheets of paper, explicate the following cases that are explained in the "15 SL Case Summaries;" Each case must be handwritten legibly. Bring both to our next class
meeting (i.e. Friday, 02-03-23). Follow the instructions above.
The two cases are:
- Engel v. Vitale (1962
-Wisconsin v. Yoder (1972)
