Introduction
Primary Goal / Mission Statement
The primary goal of the ASL Club is to foster an inclusive, immersive, and engaging environment for learning American Sign Language, celebrating Deaf culture, and bridging the communication gap between the Deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing communities.
Key Objectives
To achieve this primary goal, the club will focus on two core areas:
1. Language Acquisition and Practice:
-
To provide a regular, low-pressure setting for members of all skill levels—from beginner to advanced—to practice their conversational ASL skills.
-
To expand vocabulary and improve fluency through themed meetings, interactive games, and structured activities.
-
To host "voice-off" immersion events where members can challenge themselves to communicate solely through sign language, enhancing both their expressive and receptive skills.
2. Cultural Education and Appreciation:
-
To educate members on the rich history, values, and social norms of Deaf culture in America and around the world.
-
To promote understanding and respect for the Deaf community as a linguistic and cultural minority, not a group defined by disability.
-
To explore Deaf art, literature, poetry, and media through workshops, film screenings, and discussions.
-
To invite guest speakers from the Deaf community to share their experiences, perspectives, and stories.
