Marc Guthrie - Engineering

Welcome to Mr. Guthrie's Engineering Class
In my classroom, I encourage students to set a standard of excellence for themselves as they progress throughout the year.  I like to challenge students to think outside the box and become independent learners. It is my goal to help students become problem solvers in all aspects of their lives, not just in my classroom. If at any time you have questions or concerns, please contact me at [email protected].

Classes taught:
STEM 1,2, and 3 - Robotics
Engineering 2 - Engineering Design 1
Engineering 4 - Engineering Practicum

Please take a moment to look around my web page and see what is happening in our classes. I will be posting my lesson titles on the Weekly Lesson plans page located on the right and more detailed assignments on the Microsoft Teams pages set up for each class.

* The Weekly Lessons Page will give you an idea of what we are studying in class this week.

* A full year syllabus and other documents that students will use regularly are located on the Class Files - Frequently Used Documents page.

Thanks for visiting and feel free to contact me with any questions.

ABOUT MR. GUTHRIE
I graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in 1995 with a BS degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and later earned a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership from Arkansas State University. I am certified in Technical Education and have been teaching Engineering for the past 13 years. This is my 29th year teaching in Rutherford County.
My goal is to prepare our students to become problem solvers whether they enter engineering fields or other areas of industry and business. Someone who can think analytically and evaluate problems from multiple perspectives is much more vauable to our society than those who rely on others to think for them. I let students freely explore solutions and let failure become a part of that learning experience. I enjoy teaching engineering and look forward to bringing challenges to the students of Central Magnet. If you should need to contact me for any reason, please feel free to do so at [email protected]

ABOUT MY STEM & ENGINEERING CLASSES

In my class, I encourage students to look at the problems presented to them and make their solutions/decisions based on what they can interpret from the information given. I have done my best to make my classes a good mix of both Problem Based and Project Based learning with a higher emphasis on Problem Based outcomes. When we start solving problems I believe we are better prepared for the future that our students will face. Students are encouraged to look beyond the classroom doors, the conventional answers and methods, and investigate the solutions from all perspectives. I look at this class as an extraordinary opportunity to discuss the future, it's opportunities, and look for a better understanding of the world around us. Students are expected to do their best while maintaining a professional atmosphere that encourages learning. I employ a hands-on, student centered learning environment that puts a lot of emphasis on student driven learning. I believe in learning by doing and want my students to challenge themselves in the effort they put forth to become lifelong learners as well as problem solvers. Sometimes it is about the process and less about the outcome that helps our learning be most effective. Most tasks are group oriented and students are required to collaborate to solve the problem given to them. Students are expected to participate in all activities and work with their group. Insight, empathy, and new ideas are welcomed and appreciated. As we go through the year, it is my goal that students will leave my class prepared to solve the problems of today and be better prepared for the challenges of tomorrow.
